  • Panic of 1873: a number of railroads, including the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (StP&P), went bankrupt
  • 1878: Hill joined with several partners to buy out the failing St. Paul & Pacific Railroad
  • 1891: James J. Hill House completed
  • May 29, 1916: Hill died in his home in St. Paul
