Election Returns, Miscellaneous, 1917-1984
Abstracts of votes for primary, general, and special elections, received from the county auditors of various counties or separated from the microfilmed Official Documents of the Secretary of State’s office. They were retained to fill gaps in the election returns held by the Secretary of State’s office.

  • Voters' lists [county name]

Contested Elections

Election Contest Records, 1890-1981
Court transcripts, affidavits, legislative election committee reports and minutes, ballots and tally sheets, legal papers, and other records relating to the process of resolving contested elections, primarily involving legislative seats.

Nominating Petitons & Affidavits of Nomination

For nominating petitions search the library catalog using the following terms: 

  • Elections Minnesota
  • Local elections [county name]; or Local elections [municipal name]
  • Nominations for office
  • Petitions

You can also search for the "Minnesota Election Division" records by using the Advanced Search. Then choosing "Author/Creator" from the drop down menu, and entering "Minnesota Election Division."

Nominating Petitions, 1917-1984
Petitions signed by registered voters, nominating candidates for state offices, the state legislature, Congress, and United States President or presidential elector. Most are for minor party or independent candidates. The majority are for the November general elections, although primaries and special elections are represented, as well. They are variously titled: "nominating petition," "certificate of nomination," and "affidavit of nomination" are the most common.
