LGBTQ Minnesotans

Research materials related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities and individuals in Minnesota.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ)  individuals and communities have a rich past and vibrant present here in the state of Minnesota.  Using our collections you can get a sense of the history of social, cultural, and political life of the LGBTQ community in Minnesota, whether it's researching marriage equality, political activists such as Leo Treadway, or performance art at the Coffeehouse Collective.
This guide is not meant to be comprehensive, but collections listed here are a starting point for research at MNHS:

Note: Research in this area may prove difficult due to the evolution of language within and about this community. Materials from 1970 forward are both more abundant and easier to find due to the increased mainstream visibility.  Please see "search tips" boxes in this guide for assistance in navigating these issues.
