A business directory, as a separate entity from a city directory, may cover a city, county, multicounty, state or larger region.
In the early years they were referred to as advertising directories and often included only those businesses that could afford to pay to be included.
In addition to the names of businesses there were ads for goods and services. By the late 1800s business directories were listing "all" variety of businesses in the area.
