Useful dates to search for Sailing:

  • 1883: Excelsior Yacht Club (EYC) established
  • 1889: After years of competition, the EYC and Minnetonka Yacht Club merged
  • 1896: J.O. Johnson invented the inland scow
  • 1904: Johnson Boatworks of White Bear Lake formed
  • June 1, 1979: Gerry Spiess set off from Norfolk, VA to sail across the Atlantic 
  • 1981:  Spiess sailed Yankee Girl across the Pacific
  • 1998:  Johnson Boatworks sold; White Bear Boatworks formed
  • 1998:  University of Minnesota Sailing Team formed as a club sport

The Minnesota Historical Society holds the world's largest collection of Minnesota newspapers, with dates ranging from 1849 to the present day.

Past issues of most newspaper titles are available on microfilm in the MNHS library, but there is also digital access to select newspapers
