Newsboy distributing January 1937 Minneapolis Journal.The Minnesota Historical Society holds the world's largest collection of Minnesota newspapers, with dates ranging from 1849 to the present day.

Past issues of most newspaper titles are available on microfilm in the MNHS library, but there is also digital access to select newspapers

Dates:

  • November 28, 1905: Sinking of the Madeira.
  • June 30, 1906: Congress approves funding for lighthouse construction.  
  • July 31, 1910: Split Rock Lighthouse commissioned.
  • October 2, 1910: Lighthouse Assistants Sexton and Gill leave the lighthouse via rowboat on a mail run.  They never return and are presumed drowned.   
  • January 1, 1969: Coast Guard announces the closing of the lighthouse.  
  • May 2, 1971: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources dedicates its new Split Rock Lighthouse State Park.  
  • November 10, 1975: Sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
